How to Reset the TikTok Content Algorithm
Resetting the TikTok algorithm clears the behavioral signals used to personalize your For You Page (FYP). Your followers, following list, drafts, and posted videos remain completely unchanged.
Step 1: Use the Official “Refresh” Feature
This is the most direct method:
- Open TikTok and tap Profile (bottom right)
- Tap the three-line menu icon (top right)
- Go to Settings and Privacy
- Tap Content Preferences
- Select Refresh your For You Feed
- Confirm when prompted (you may be asked multiple times)
⚠️ This action cannot be undone. Your feed will immediately shift to broadly popular/trending content while the algorithm relearns your preferences.
Step 2: Clear the App Cache
Clearing cache removes temporary data TikTok stores that can influence recommendations:
- Go to Profile → Menu → Settings and Privacy
- Tap Free Up Space
- Tap Clear next to Cache
Step 3: Manage Interest Topics
Use TikTok’s Topic Management tool to manually tune your feed without a full reset:
- Go to Settings → Content Preferences → Manage Topics
- Select categories you want to see more of (humor, nature, travel, sports, etc.)
- Deselect or reduce visibility of unwanted categories
- You can adjust up to 11 categories
Step 4: Remove Unwanted Signals
Actively prune bad content signals:
- Long-press any video → tap “Not Interested” to suppress similar content
- Unfollow accounts whose content no longer interests you
- Avoid zombie-scrolling (passively watching irrelevant content teaches the algorithm the wrong things)
Step 5: Rebuild Your FYP Intentionally
The first week after a reset is when the algorithm learns fastest — your actions have disproportionate weight:
- Watch videos to completion — completion rate accounts for ~40–50% of the algorithm’s weighting
- Like, comment, and share only content you genuinely enjoy
- Search specific topics and hashtags you care about and engage with results
- Follow new creators that align with your current interests
When NOT to Reset
A full reset throws away months of learning. Avoid resetting if:
- Only a small portion (~20%) of your feed is irrelevant — use “Not Interested” instead
- Your feed is mostly good with only minor annoyances
- You recently made major changes (give the algorithm time to adapt first)
A reset makes the most sense when your interests have fundamentally changed, the majority of your FYP is irrelevant, or you’re seeing recycled/old content.
