How to Reset the Instagram Content Algorithm

Resetting the Instagram algorithm clears the suggested content signals Instagram uses to recommend posts, Reels, and Explore content — it does not delete your account, posts, followers, or DMs.

Step 1: Use the Official Reset Feature

This is the fastest and most direct method:

  1. Go to your Profile (bottom right)
  2. Tap the three lines (menu) in the top-right corner
  3. Go to Settings & Privacy
  4. Scroll to Content Preferences (listed under What You See)
  5. Tap Reset Suggested Content
  6. Review prompted options (followed accounts, ad topics)
  7. Tap Next, then Reset to confirm

⚠️ This action cannot be undone. Ads and ad preferences are unaffected.

Step 2: Clean Up Your Feed

Remove noisy or irrelevant signals:

  • Unfollow accounts you no longer care about (brands, inactive pages, irrelevant influencers)
  • Mute accounts you want to keep but not see often
  • Tap three dots → “Not Interested” on posts you dislike — this actively teaches the algorithm what to avoid

Step 3: Rebuild With Intentional Engagement

After the reset, Instagram rebuilds recommendations based entirely on new behavior:

  • Save posts — saving is the strongest positive signal in 2026
  • Like, comment, and share only content relevant to your interests
  • Search new topics in Explore and engage with results you enjoy

Step 4: Reset Your Explore Page

  • Go to Profile → Your Activity → Recent Searches → Clear All
  • Search fresh topics and interact with new content
  • Follow new creators in your areas of interest

Step 5: Use “Your Algorithm” Feature (Reels)

Instagram launched a transparency tool called “Your Algorithm” in December 2025 that lets you:

  • View topics Instagram thinks you’re interested in
  • Add or remove interest topics manually
  • Adjust how prominently certain topics appear in Reels

Step 6: Optional — Take a Short Break

A 24–48 hour break allows old behavioral signals to lose influence, so when you return, fresh interactions dominate the algorithm’s learning.

What the Reset Does NOT Fix

  • Low reach or engagement issues (requires content strategy changes, not a reset)
  • Ad preferences or sponsored content
  • Who you follow or your existing posts/Stories
